The best training tires

• There are many considerations when choosing a tire for daily training use, including the rider's size and form; typical routes and road condition; season and weather; and of course aesthetics. Here are a few I know and love.

  Schwalbe Ultremo	189g	$65	Has a cult following in Europe. Race & train on one tire? This is the one. Far and away the most durable tire in the featherweight class. Runs in excess of 3,000 miles.
  Schwalbe Stelvio Plus	320g	$55	Has impenetrable elastic rubber film beneath tread. The most bomb-proof 23c on the market. Great for those who absolutely hate fixing flats.
  Panaracer Extreme Duro	240g	$40	I have been running these on my daily ride lately, and the surface in impeccably clean after 500 miles. Very sticky and light enough to pretend I'm fast. Very popular in Japan and the UK.
  Panaracer Pasela TG (pictured)	300g	$25	The best overall value for over a decade. Kevlar belt, super high mileage, and awesome rain-shedding tread for those who train in the winter. There is no other tire under $40 that compares. Also available in 25, 28, and 32c for larger riders.
  Continental Ultra Gatorskin	300g	$40	The most popular training tire on the market. Avoid lower end Continentals like the Ultra series, as they are made in a different factory and are OEM junk. The Gatorskin has been the standard for many years in this category.
